Chapter Bio

The chapter is named in honor of United States Air Force Captain James McKinstry Jr., a C-130 pilot who was tragically killed in action during the Vietnam War. The C-130B on which Capt. McKinstry was co-pilot was conducting an airdrop of supplies to personnel occupying an abandoned airstrip at A Luoi, Thua Thien Province, Republic of Vietnam, on 26 April 1968. The airdrops were made in extremely poor weather, with low clouds and poor visibility. Capt. McKinstry’s aircraft was shot down by ground fire during the 21st mission conducted by his unit. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and Distinguished Flying Cross for his actions on that day.

Capt. McKinstry was a charter member of IPMS-USA; charter members were the first 102 members to join the new (at the time) IPMS-USA organization, and Capt. McKinstry was IPMS number 97. IPMS-McKinstry was the first IPMS-USA chapter formed in the Chicago area. During one of the early meetings after formation of the club, choice of a namesake for the newly chartered chapter was discussed. An early suggestion was famous local hero Butch O’Hare (later honored as the namesake of another Chicago chapter), but Ernie McDowell suggested Capt. McKinstry, since he had been both a modeler and IPMS-USA member, and his suggestion was adopted.
